We Live in Anxious Times

We have begun facing the effects of a changing climate, the U.S. economy has been on somewhat shaky ground, inflation is taking hold and COVID has had a huge impact on our economy, culture and politics. Arghhh…is there no end in sight? It’s no wonder anxiety is on the rise. But what is anxiety?

According to APA CEO Arthur C. Evans, Jr., PhD. Anxiety disorders are common and prevalent, with about 26% of males and 40% of females experiencing an anxiety disorder in their lifetimes, according to the task force report. The percentage of adults with recent symptoms of anxiety increased from 36% to 41% from August 2020 to February 2021 alone. These symptoms are often unrecognized and can lead to a variety of mental and physical health problems.

Behavioral Health During the COVID Crisis

According to the NIMH (National Institute on Mental Health), several recent surveys have “shown substantial increases in self-reported behavioral health symptoms during the COVID crisis. According to one CDC report, which surveyed adults across the U.S. in late June of 2020, 31% of respondents reported symptoms of anxiety or depression.

In a recent study published online in Translational Behavioral Medicine, coauthor Rebekah Levine Coley, PhD, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts stated that, “…prevalence rates (for mental health disorders) were 6 times higher than national norms from 2019 was striking.”

And that’s just anxiety from COVID. What about the other things in our lives making us feel anxious? Clearly, there are many types of anxiety. Fortunately, CBD may offer a promising, alternative solution to those with feelings of anxiety.

Five Main Types of Anxiety

There are five main types of anxiety – Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Social Phobia (or Social Anxiety Disorder)¹. This article won’t address any of these types or how CBD may manage and/or treat them. Because CBD is considered a supplement, we cannot make clinical claims; however, there is mounting research and data pointing to promise when used correctly.

How CBD May Help Anxiety

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most abundant non-psychoactive component of cannabis; it displays a very low affinity for cannabinoid receptors, facilitates endocannabinoid signaling by inhibiting the hydrolysis of anandamide, and stimulates both transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 and 2 and serotonin type 1A receptors. Since CBD interacts with a wide variety of molecular targets in the brain, its therapeutic potential has been investigated in a number of neuropsychiatric diseases, including anxiety and mood disorders. Specifically, CBD has received growing attention due to its anxiolytic and antidepressant properties. As a consequence, and given its safety profile, CBD is considered a promising new agent in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders. However, the exact molecular mechanism of action of CBD still remains unknown².

Some Research Indicates Promise

In a 2020 study, 400 patients in New Zealand were assessed for CBD and 397 received a prescription. The study participants received medical CBD prescriptions for a variety of ailments, including non-cancer pain, cancer-related symptoms, neurological symptoms, and mental health symptoms³.

All groups reported improvements in their overall quality of life after 3 weeks of CBD treatment. The individuals who received CBD treatment for anxiety or depression reportedly experienced improvements in their ability to perform daily functions and reduce pain and anxiety or depression symptoms.

An observational study was aimed at assessing general health in medicinal cannabis users and non-using controls with anxiety and/or depression. Their conclusions? “Medicinal cannabis use may reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms in clinically anxious and depressed populations.”4

Conclusions

Scientists and researchers have come a long way when it comes to how CBD affects anxiety. So far, CBD shows a lot of promise. Ongoing research will continue discovering more and more about the impact CBD has on the Endocannabinoid System and our bodies. Sea King CBD will keep up with research studies and do our best to keep you informed.  Meanwhile, below are some suggested products to consider.
