Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. If you have it, you may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. As a result, you may get too little sleep or have poor-quality sleep. You may not feel refreshed when you wake up.

What are the Types of Insomnia?

Insomnia can be acute (short-term) or chronic (ongoing). Acute insomnia is common. Common causes include stress at work, family pressures, or a traumatic event. It usually lasts for days or weeks.

Chronic insomnia lasts for a month or longer. Most cases of chronic insomnia are secondary. This means they are the symptom or side effect of some other problem, such as certain medical conditions, medicines, and other sleep disorders. Substances such as caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol can also be a cause.

Sometimes chronic insomnia is the primary problem. This means that it is not caused by something else. Its cause is not well understood, but long-lasting stress, emotional upset, travel and shift work can be factors. Primary insomnia usually lasts more than one month. [1]

It all gets down to what is causing the insomnia. Anxiety is often an issue. According to the Sleep Foundation Organization, factors could include stress, an irregular sleep schedule, poor sleeping habits, mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, physical illnesses and pain, medications, neurological problems, and specific sleep disorders. [2]

CBD Research

A recent surge in scientific publications has found preclinical and clinical evidence documenting value for CBD in some neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia. The result of these studies led to the first FDA-approved drug for epilepsy and seizures called Epidiolex™. Evidence points toward a calming effect for CBD in the central nervous system. Interest in CBD as a treatment of a wide range of disorders has exploded, yet few clinical studies of CBD exist in the psychiatric literature.

A critical evaluation of literature regarding the therapeutic benefits of CBD in the management of insomnia was recently conducted. The results of a systematic review by several researchers suggest that CBD alone or with equal quantities of THC may be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of insomnia. They also concluded that further study was necessary  before definitive inferences can be made.

A study was done in Modena, Italy that showed patients with sleep disorders responded favorably to the co-administration of CBD and melatonin, according to data published in the Italian journal La Clinica Terapeutica.  (Full text of the study, “Insomnia treatment: A new multi-tasking natural compound based on melatonin and cannabis extracts,” appears in La Clinica Terapeutica.)

The data suggests that a CBD-melatonin formula may be competitive with the classic hypnotic synthetic drugs. The antioxidant activity of melatonin offers a further benefit to the brain network, restoring biological clock functions, while CBD, reducing chronic pain perception, helps to complete the neuromuscular relaxation and to relieve anxiety fulfilling a very balanced sensation of wellbeing during the sleep.4

Clinical trials have previously shown that the administration of either oral cannabinoid products or plant-derived cannabis extracts is associated with improvements in sleep in patients with insomnia. Observational studies also have shown that subjects who use herbal cannabis prior to bedtime report significant improvements in perceived insomnia levels and severity.

Anxiety and Insomnia are Related

study results graph

In 2019, a large retrospective case series at a psychiatric clinic were conducted involving the clinical application of CBD for anxiety and sleep complaints as an adjunct to usual treatment. The retrospective chart review included monthly documentation of anxiety and sleep quality in 103 adult patients. Their objective was to determine whether CBD helps improve sleep and/or anxiety in a clinical population.

The final sample consisted of 72 adults presenting with primary concerns of anxiety (n = 47) or poor sleep (n = 25). Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%) but fluctuated over time. In the chart review above, CBD was well tolerated in all but 3 patients. Their conclusion? Cannabidiol may hold benefit for anxiety-related disorders. Once again, controlled clinical studies are needed.5

A team of doctors and researchers conducted a retrospective study of medicinal cannabis users “to investigate the use profile and perceived efficacy of cannabinoids for the management of insomnia.”

Data were collected using the Strainprint app, the leading free cannabis and medical marijuana tracking app, which allows medicinal cannabis users to log conditions and symptoms, track cannabis use, and monitor symptom severity pre- and post-cannabis use.

Their analyses examined 991 medicinal cannabis users with insomnia across 24,189 tracked cannabis use sessions. Sessions were analyzed, and both descriptive statistics and linear mixed-effects modeling were completed to examine use patterns and perceived efficacy.

Their conclusion was was that medicinal cannabis users perceive a significant improvement in insomnia with cannabinoid use6.

Conclusions

Can CBD help you sleep better? Since CBD shows promise in treating pain and anxiety, it makes sense that it might help people sleep better. Further, a combination of melatonin and CBD may help insomniacs.  There are many forms of CBD you can choose to take. Oil drops and sprays are a quick way to get CBD into your system when taken sublingually. Gummies are a delicious way to get CBD into your system and capsules are quick and easy, but keep in mind the CBD in these forms has to go through your digestive tract before it gets into your system. It may take an hour or more to feel the effects of the CBD.
